# OpenClaw Honest Assessment

## Why this exists

12 audience members at Event #1 use OpenClaw as part of their AI stack. Trigger phrases from registration: „stability", „Workflows in OpenClaw", „ease of use and reliability".

OpenClaw has dokumentierte Security-Issues that are now public knowledge. If you are running it in production with sensitive data, you need to know. If you are evaluating it, you need to know. This document gives you the data without the dunking.

## What OpenClaw is good at

Credit where due. OpenClaw solved real problems:
- Visual workflow orchestration (drag-drop instead of code)
- Cross-tool integration via plugins
- Open-source ecosystem with active community
- Lower learning curve than Python-based agent frameworks
- Skills library (ClawHub) with thousands of community skills

If your workflow is „connect 5 tools, run a sequence, log result", OpenClaw works and works well.

## What OpenClaw is NOT good at, the documented issues

### 1. CVE-2026-25253 (CVSS 8.80, HIGH severity)

Disclosed 2026, exploitable via crafted URLs and cross-site WebSocket hijacking.
- **Impact:** Severe on confidentiality, integrity, availability
- **Scope:** 180.000+ global instances vulnerable before patch
- **Attack vector:** Remote, no authentication required for exploitation
- **Patch status:** Available, but adoption rate of patched version unknown

If you are running OpenClaw without confirming you are on the patched version, you are running unpatched.

**Action:** Run `openclaw --version` and compare to the latest patched release. Upgrade if behind.

### 2. ClawHavoc supply chain attack

Documented incident in 2026:
- **1.184 malicious packages** planted on ClawHub (the official skills registry)
- **Roughly 1 in 5 skills** were compromised
- **9.000+ installations** affected
- **Attack vector:** Typosquatting + dependency hijacking

If you installed any ClawHub skill in 2026, audit your installed skills. Compare names to the canonical author list. Anything you do not recognize, remove.

**Action:** `openclaw skills list --source` and audit each non-canonical source.

### 3. Memory limitations

OpenClaw was not designed for persistent memory across sessions. It excels at workflow orchestration but does not solve „my AI remembers what we discussed last week". You need a separate memory layer (vector DB, knowledge graph, or Claude skills with explicit memory).

### 4. Code surface area

OpenClaw runs ~430.000 lines of code. By comparison, NanoClaw (the security-focused alternative) is 5 files + 1 process. Larger surface = larger attack surface. Larger surface = more bugs.

This is not a moral judgment. It is a math statement.

### Choose NanoClaw if
- You handle regulated data (medical, financial, legal)
- You need audit boundaries for compliance
- You have container/Docker expertise on team
- Founder Gavriel Cohen wrote „Don't Trust AI Agents" as project philosophy. Read it before adopting.

### Choose ZeroClaw if
- You want to run agents on edge / cheap hardware ($10 device feasible)
- You support multiple LLM providers (not Claude-locked)
- You value performance over feature breadth

### Choose Skyvern if
- 80% of your workflow is „log in to website, click buttons, copy data, submit form"
- You do NOT need cognitive agents, you need browser automation that thinks

### Choose Nanobot if
- You want to start simplest possible, scale up later
- Your workflow is single-purpose, not multi-step orchestration

### Choose OpenFang if
- You are building a multi-agent system from the start
- You want explicit agent-to-agent coordination primitives

## Should you migrate from OpenClaw?

**Stay on OpenClaw if:**
- Your setup works, you are on the patched version, you audited skills post-ClawHavoc
- Your workflow is non-sensitive (no PII, no regulated data, no financial transactions)
- Your team has the OpenClaw expertise and migration cost > stability gain

**Migrate if:**
- You handle regulated data and have not done a security audit in 6+ months
- You need persistent memory across sessions (= add Claude skills layer regardless)
- Your workflows are stuck on „it almost works" for >2 weeks
- ClawHavoc remediation feels overwhelming

## The hybrid approach Chris recommends

Most OpenClaw pain is not about OpenClaw being wrong. It is about OpenClaw being asked to do TWO jobs: workflow orchestration AND memory. It does the first well, the second poorly.

**The split-architecture pattern:**
- **Workflow layer:** OpenClaw (or NanoClaw if security matters), keep doing what works
- **Memory layer:** Claude Code + skills + MCP, build separately
- **Bridge:** OpenClaw calls Claude as a step when cognitive work is needed

This gives you OpenClaw's visual orchestration ergonomics PLUS Claude's persistent memory + cognitive depth, without forcing OpenClaw to do something it was not built for.

## What to ask any agent framework vendor

Before adopting (or staying with) any framework:

1. What is your current CVE history? Last 12 months.
2. How do you sandbox skills from your registry? What happens if one is malicious?
3. What is your patch cadence? Average time-to-patch from disclosure.
4. Is your code open-source? If yes, point me to the security audit. If no, what compliance certifications?
5. What is your largest production deployment? Reference.
6. What credentials never leave the user's machine?

If they cannot answer 4 of 6 in 5 minutes, walk away.

## Anti-patterns to avoid

- **„The patch is out so we are fine."** Patches don't help if your team doesn't deploy them. Audit your version.
- **„ClawHavoc was just typosquatting, not real."** 9.000+ installations were compromised. Real.
- **„We will migrate eventually."** Set a date or it will not happen.
- **„NanoClaw is too new to trust."** New, but built specifically to fix what OpenClaw got wrong. Different design philosophy.
- **„Visual workflow tools are dead."** Wrong. They are alive and well, just need to be paired with separate memory layers.
